Biography
Dr. Abdelmalek Bellal is a research scientist II with the Center for Process Engineering Research (CPER), where his work primarily involves managing projects with a significant focus on large-scale process engineering, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle assessments. He received his second Ph.D. in Energy Engineering from the University of North Dakota and his first Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Ferhat Abbas, Algeria. At CPER, he has concentrated on advancing applied research projects, particularly within clean energy technology initiatives. He led the development of research data for various projects from engineering scale to pilot scale, with a focus on modeling, process design, techno-economic assessment, and life cycle assessment. Recently, he served as CPER’s technical lead for upscaling the design of a novel decarbonization technology that utilizes plasma pyrolysis to convert the flare-associated petroleum gas, which is a by-product of oil production, to high-value carbon black and turquoise hydrogen. He also served as the key investigator for the design, construction, and operation of CPER's pilot plant demonstration for rare earth element extraction.
